It's a better story than you'd think.
Back in the 1600s, coffee could only leave Yemen roasted, so nobody else could grow it. As the story goes, the Sufi saint Baba Budan was heading home from Mecca when he hid seven raw coffee seeds in his beard, slipped them out of the port of Mocha and planted them on the Chandragiri slopes of Chikkamagaluru. That is how coffee first took root in India.
By the 1840s, proper coffee plantations had spread across the same slopes where those first seeds went in.
The coffee here grows under two layers of tall trees. That shade makes a cool little climate of its own, gives birds and wildlife a home, and brings out earthy, nutty, chocolatey flavours.
Those seven seeds became a signature. India has now been growing and exporting coffee for more than 150 years.
The range is now called Baba Budangiri, after the saint who started it all.
Our premium roasts are still grown in these hills.
